Guildford may be considered an affluent area, but a recent report into food poverty discovered that it has four of the most deprived neighbourhoods in England (Westborough, Stoke, Worplesdon and Ash Wharf). In three of these neighbourhoods, a third of children and young people are considered to be living in poverty.
Furthermore, the affluence of the majority in the Guildford area highlights the relative poverty of those in need and makes them feel a heightened sense of exclusion and difference.
Material Difference would initially focus on Guildford but hopes over time to expand to cover a bigger area in South West Surrey and eventually the whole county.
